Communication and advertising law

The Greffe Law Firm’s activities have led it to extend its areas of expertise to communication and advertising.

We therefore advise advertising agencies and advertisers and check their campaigns prior to broadcasting; we also advise newspapers and publishers.

The Law Firm acts in all sectors of communication and advertising law, which includes in particular copyright on artistic advertising, the protection of slogans and photographic works, advertising on the Internet, a model’s publicity rights, unfair competition and “misleading” commercial practices (misleading advertising, comparative advertising, right of criticism), and a number of specific regulations (advertisement promotions, advertising by prices, advertising for alcoholic beverages, advertising for pharmaceutical products, use of the French language, election advertising, forced sale, audiovisual advertising, advertising by signs, use of children under the age of 18 in advertising messages, etc.).

Pierre Greffe lectures in this subject at the Centre for International Studies in Intellectual Property (CEIPI) at the University of Strasbourg.

François and Pierre Greffe are also the authors of the treatise La Publicité et La Loi (Advertising and the Law) the 11th edition of which (1,300 pages) was published in May 2009, with a preface by Maurice LEVY (Chairman of the Publicis Group).

This Treatise was first published in 1965 and also includes a section on communication and advertising law as applied in European Union Member States and Switzerland.

Since 1995, the Law Firm has also published two issues each year (in April and September) of La Gazette du Palais focussing on advertising law, under the supervision of François and Pierre Greffe.

Each issue includes publications of legal decisions made in the field of advertising.

Jurists from the Autorité de Régulation Professionnelle de la Publicité (ARPP [the supervisory authority of the advertising profession], formerly the BVP) and chief legal officers of top advertisers and advertising agencies generally contribute to these issues of La Gazette du Palais.
